District 205 Board settles on new calendar after 12 emergency days

The District 205 School Board Wednesday night decided on a school calendar that will make up all but three days missed because of dangerous winter conditions this school year.

Superintendent John Asplund says that twelve days have been missed so far and looking at the forecast he says “we may not be done yet.”

Now the school year’s third quarter will end on April 5, adding three days after to the quarter and extending the last day of the year to June 7.  The end of the quarter had already been shifted and two half days turned into full days.

Asplund says there would be a host of complications with moving back the final day of school any further, such as conflicting summer school schedules and at least 19 staff saying they would be unavailable.

Board members strongly favored making up all the days but settled on this as a compromise.

Members Maury Lyon and Vicki Banks recalled how adamant the public was that days be made up after the teacher’s strike in 2014.

One possible downside of this new calendar is that high school students would take third quarter finals the week after spring break.
