Special Prosecutor to be hired to assist State’s Attorney’s office

Knox County State’s Attorney John Pepmeyer has indicated that he will be taking on the special prosecutor that was appointed to assist his office with the caseload after being unable to find qualified candidates to fill an open assistant position.

In a letter to the county finance committee, Pepmeyer informed members that at the $47,500 dollar salary approved by the full board was too low to attract suitable applicants.

Assistant State’s Attorney Sabrina Stroops informed the committee that of the applicants that had applied, only two were attorneys – but lacked the experience needed.

“The two that applied that were attorneys have focused their career on civil work and don’t have any experience in any type of criminal prosecution.”

The request was made to raise the starting salary of this new ASA to $54,000, which Stroops called a more realistic salary.

No action could be taken last night. The State’s Attorney’s office will be utilizing the special prosecutor, which will cost the county at an hourly rate.

The letter from Pepmeyer, read by committee chair David Amor, stated that he hoped to have the special prosecutor appointment filled by March 1.
