Multi-vehicle crash on I-74 Thursday morning

A multi-vehicle crash yesterday morning causes one vehicle to catch fire.

According to a release from the Illinois State Police, at around 9:30 a.m. yesterday morning three vehicles were traveling westbound on Interstate 74 at mile marker 37 – five mile south of Woodhull.

44-year-old Michael Hanson of Zearing, Iowa was driving a Mercury sedan and moved into the left lane to pass 42-year-old Aaron Moore of Pekin in a Ford pickup truck.

Steven McGahey of Gilson while driving a Chevrolet SUV was already in the left lane ahead of Moore and was experiencing mechanical trouble and slowed down.

Hanson struck McGahey causing them both to lose control, cross into the median and come to a rest where Hanson’s Mercury caught fire. Moore swerved to miss and came to a rest in the right ditch.

Traffic on I-74 was temporarily shut down to extinguish the fire.

Hanson was transported to OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center in Galesburg with non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash.

The scene was cleared by 11:00 a.m.

Responding was the Knox County Sheriff, Clover Fire Department, Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police.
