Aldermen to considering bids related to Park Plaza and West Theater

The Galesburg City Council might approve a bid to demolish the West Theater at Monday night’s meeting.

Of the 6 bids received for the work, Shawn Stoneking Corporation came out the lowest, in the amount of about $250,000.

City council documents say that not only is the building’s plat to be worked into the Park Plaza redesign but removing it will take care of a “public safety hazard.”

The quarter-million-dollar price tag on demolition is being covered by Tax Increment Financing funds.

The administration is asking the council to authorize a transfer from TIF II to TIF IV, the zone where the theater resides.

Council can also give the ok to a supplemental engineering agreement with the firm that has designed the new Park Plaza.

Massie and Massie are asking for another $12,000 to redesign to keep the project within the budgeted $1.4 million.

The administration proposes offsetting this cost by doing the construction inspection in-house.

After a year and a half’s worth of work, Aldermen are voting on accepting the city’s comprehensive plan.

The plan is designed to serve as a guide to city policy and decision making for the next couple of decades.

Countless workshops, surveys, and interviews were done by firm Houseal Lavigne to gather input from citizens, community leaders, and stakeholders.

Houseal Lavigne has also used a lot of information gathered by the Galesburg on Track Heart and Soul project.

As the comprehensive plan lays tracks for the future, the council may also give consent to obliterate a few homes that have seen better days.

1009 Accommodation Road will be demolished if approved, as will 586-590 West South Street, a multi-family residence built in 1906.

The City Council meets Monday at 6:30 p.m.
