Warren County Jail could soon reopen.

The Warren County Jail in Monmouth may soon be reopening in the coming weeks. In early August, the jail closed and the 23 inmates being held were transported to the Mercer County Jail in Aledo. The need for a new jail in Warren County and the number of officers leaving for higher pay elsewhere lead to the closure. Edwards tells WGIL that at the time, there were several factors leading to the closure. “Also about that time, our medical provider had decided that they wished to opt out,” Edwards said. “So not only were we short on manpower, we were at the point where we had to find a new medical provider. The Department of Corrections had indicated that perhaps our space wasn’t adequate for the number of people we were holding. So just a lot of things came about but the biggest issue, of course, was the manpower.” Edwards said housing inmates in Mercer County cost the county approximately $27,000 per month – $40 per day per inmate. But since the closure, Edwards says lots of work is being done. Bunks have been removed, showers and heating units are being worked on and general maintenance is being done. The jail has a new medical provider, a new food provider, and will be ready to operate out of one portion of the jail beginning next week.
