Brazilian guitarist coming to Knox for Winter Jazz Series

Knox College has made a regular habit of bringing renowned jazz musicians to Galesburg to teach and perform.

Famed Brazilian jazz singer and guitarist Luciano Antonio is returning to the school this month.

Antonio was last at Knox for the college’s 2014 Winter Jazz Series.

The Winter Jazz Series is a showcase for global artists with diverse cultural perspectives, that has the invitees lead a workshop with jazz students and then a free concert for the public.

First, he’ll be leading a workshop in Jay Rehearsal Hall that anyone is invited to, that will show attendees how to play Brazilian percussion instruments with a chance to participate in a traditional Brazilian Batucada, a sub-style of Samba drumming.

Later that night, sit back and enjoy the sounds of the Luciano Antonio Brazilian Quarter as they play a free concert in Kresge Recital within the confines of the Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

In the past few years, artists steeped in Cuban, Peruvian and Brazilian styles have been featured.

The Knox Jazz Year also includes the Jerome Mirza Jazz Residency that also brings a renowned artist to campus for shows and workshops in the fall and of course the Rootabega Jazz Fest in the spring which features a famed artist, and a bevy of musical talent over the course of a week.

If you can’t make it, we’re only a few short months away from the Knox Rootabega Jazz Fest in April, which this year features drummer Xavier Breaker.
