New report measures safety of school roads

Data released from a software company indicates that drivers in Illinois are among the worst at driving safely around schools.

That’s according to Zendrive, who released information collected through their analytics of many smartphone apps you may have on your phone.

Zendrive collected data like speeding, aggressive acceleration and braking, and even phone use while driving, from any phone that drove within a quarter mile of a school dangerously last April.

Policy director Noah Budnick says Illinois ranked 49th in terms of driver safety around schools.

In Galesburg, RAES, Steele Elementary, and Galesburg Christian School were ranked the worst on the various criteria.

The worst ranked school roads in the area were around Knoxville High School.

Among the safest school roads in the county, according to Zendrive, are Costa Catholic School, Galesburg High School, Gale, Abingdon-Avon High School, and Knoxville Junior High.

Because the data was collected in April, it does not take into account winter weather conditions, where roads may be covered in ice or snow.
