Puppy for Christmas? Maybe not, says expert

We’ve all seen pictures and videos before of children getting a new puppy or kitten for Christmas. But, is it a good idea?

Cathy White of the Guardian Angels Humane Society tells WGIL, not really.

“What people need to remember is that dogs and cats, for the most part, are babies. Even the grown ones are about two years old as far as their mentality,” says White. “When you do that, that scares them. And not only that, the kinds are really ramped. We all were as kids. So that’s just one of their many gifts.”

But White tells WGIL there is a work-around.

“Give them a picture or a cat bed or a dog bed, or some treats,” says White. “Wrap them up, and say ‘After Christmas, we’ll pick out the pet.’ We’ve had some terrible tragedies. One little kitten was slammed in a door by an excited child.”

White says she’s heard of of everything from injuries to pets, to worse, when parents have tried to do things like leaving a puppy under the tree.
