Winter weather makes harsh return to the area

Winter weather is going to cause a lot of problems in the area Sunday — that is, if it isn’t already by the time you read this.

The National Weather Service offices in the Quad Cities and in Lincoln have most of our area under a Winter Storm Warning. For Knox County it starts at noon. For other counties, it starts earlier.

Forecasters say morning rain will eventually change to all snow. Three to seven inches of snow is forecast for Galesbug during the day, with another one to three inches of snow possible at night. If that wasn’t enough, when the snow does fall, it will be accompanied by wind gusts close to 40 miles per hour at times, which are expected to cause blowing and drifting of snow, along with reduced visibility.

Galesburg Fire Chief and Knox County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Simkins says he hopes that the transition from rain to snow is quick, so that ice accumulation doesn’t happen and cause further problems.

The Illinois Department of Transportation urges altering travel plans if you can. To keep on top of winter road conditions throughout the day, you can CLICK HERE for an IDOT condition map.
