Chamber of Commerce Director asks shoppers to consider buying locally on Saturday

It’s no secret that online outlets and big box retailers dominate the retail landscape, and that can hold for holiday shopping as well. But members of the local business community, like their counterparts around the country, are reminding shoppers to think about local shops, businesses and restaurants tomorrow on Small Business Satuday.

American Express originally launched the campaign in 2010 and Jessica Linder with the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce says several business owners locally have commented on how they’ve seen Small Business Saturday gain traction in the last few years.

“And really as people to start to know a little better that it happens and the shops are open…” Linder says. “I think a lot of us think that small businesses and local shops are probably closed for the holiday. Most of them are open Friday and Saturday and they’re ready for you.”

She says as fun as it may be to shop in Chicago or the Peoria and Quad City area, when you shop local your dollars are staying where you live.

That supports not only the owners and employees of that business but their suppliers, accountants, lawyers, and Linder adds that many local business generally work hard to support each other.

Linder agrees with a sentiment shared previously by Knox County Area Partnership for Economic Development President Ken Springer, that even shopping big box retailers helps the community as long as you do it locally.
