Dist. #202 approves increased tentative tax levy

The District #202 Board of Education approved a tentative tax levy for 2018 at Monday night’s meeting.

Superintendent Steve Wilder informed the board that the Knox County Assessment Office is projecting the district to have an EAV of almost $108,951,163, an increase of 2.55-percent in property value. As a result, the levy that Wilder presented was 4.99-percent higher than last year at $4,885,083.

“This reflects past practice and accounts for increases in salaries, wages, cost of benefits, etcetera,” Wilder told the board.

Broken down into real dollars, with the current EAV projection, the tax rate would come in at $4.48.

“In realistic terms, the owner of a $100,000 home would pay $1,479 – which is up from $1,449 a year ago. The owner of a $200,000 home would pay $2,957 in property taxes, an increase of $60.”

Wilder also included data that showed that while the projected tax rate is an increase $0.08 from the last year, it still is on the low side when compared to the tax rates of the last ten years. He said that the average tax rate since 2009 is $4.55

He also informed the school board that when compared to other districts in the area, Knoxville has one of the lowest tax rates. In a bar graph, data indicates that only Williamsfield has a lower tax rate in the area than District #202
