Bidding process begins for West Theater demo and Park Plaza reconstruction

Galesburg Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl says bid documents will go out this week for the demolition of the West Theater. The theater’s demolition is an important component of the planned overhaul of Park Plaza in the center of Downtown Galesburg.

Carl expects work to bring the building down to get underway after the first of the year.

Also right now the city is out to bid for the work on the Plaza itself, which would include the parking lot to the south, with that work slated for March 2019.

One complication is an adjacent property, 120 E. Main, that has some leaning issues with its easterly wall.

The building was recently sold to Dominick Leonhard of Galesburg, who the city has contacted with a list of TIF incentives for him to take advantage of to fix the wall.

“It’s been a little tricky trying to coordinate it but I think in the end it’s definitely worthwhile in coordination with the adjoining business owners and their buildings and it should come off as a good project for everyone. We’re trying to get everybody’s input down there,” Carl says. “I’m glad we’re ready to move forward with it now and hopefully everything will come together with the other building.”
