Teri Peterson launching bid for East Galesburg Mayor after incumbent’s controversial comment

A comment made by the Mayor of East Galesburg may have spurred his next opponent for the office.

Mayor Stephen Bradley is on video saying he’d “rather get a man” to fill a vacancy on the board at the Wednesday meeting of the Village’s Board of Trustees.

A woman, Teri Peterson was in the audience, who had attended board meetings for months and also had recently filed petitions to the board.

Now she wants to take Bradley’s position in the April 2019 consolidated election.

She thinks the general population of East Galesburg feels like they don’t have a voice on the board.

“There is a small portion in the town board meeting where you can voice concerns,” Peterson says. “Generally when it’s done I think that on both part everyone instead of taking a proactive type approach, it’s more confrontative.”

As far as Bradley’s commenting that he’d prefer a man, Peterson says she isn’t angry with him.

But still, in light of the national attention focused on gender equality and discrimination the comment moved her to run.

She was also encouraged by her longtime friend, Robin Wilt, the current Mayor of Bushnell, the town where Peterson grew up.

WGIL reached out to Mayor Bradley for comment but have not gotten in touch with him.

Peterson has worked in marketing most of her career which says can be put to good use as mayor, since both involving finding out what people want and need.
