Performances, fundraisers, and honoring those who served this Veterans Day Weekend

Sugar High Theatricals presents: “It’s Only a Play” November 9th-11th at the Kensington Ballroom. The performance takes the audience to the 1992 opening night of “The Golden Egg” on Broadway. Director Gary Mustain says the play feels a little bit like a Broadway show. “It’s about the opening of a Broadway show,” Mustain said. “It’s after the show has opened, and it’s at the cast party afterwards. They’re waiting for the reviews to come out. It’s a very, very funny show. It also kind of takes into account comparing Broadway to Hollywood. They do a comparison that’s very funny.” Tickets are $15 per person or $5 for students and are available with a reservation or at the door. Reservations are recommended, as seating is limited. Senior discounts and active military discounts are available upon request. The show is rated PG-13 due to language and drug references. Showtimes are Friday, November 9th and Saturday, November 10th at 7:30 pm and Sunday, November 11th at 3:30 pm. For tickets, call 309 532-78-40 or email sugarhightheatricals@gmail.com.

GHS Boys Basketball Trivia will take over Cedar Creek Hall in Galesburg Saturday, November 10th. Doors open at 5:30 pm with trivia beginning at 6:30 pm. A Veterans Day program intends to give its audience a taste of the World War 1 era. The Galesburg Community Chorus presents: “Over There: A Remembrance of the War to End All Wars” at the First Lutheran Church Sunday, November 11th at 2:00 pm. Director Tim Pahel tells WGIL the performance is a variety of selections that will celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War 1. “There are trench songs (featured),” Pahel said. “There’s music set to poems that were written during the war. Early in the war there were recruiting songs and popular songs that supported the war effort. So there’s a variety of songs that are very serious and heartbreaking. There are moments that are just kind of silly – they’re not that serious that just bring to life the feeling of the time.” Tickets for the concert are $15 and $12 for seniors. First Lutheran Church is located on the corner of East Water street and North Seminary Street in Galesburg.

The 18th Annual Galesburg Veterans’ Day Parade is Sunday, November 11th. Twenty one-year veteran of the National Guard and parade organizer Ryan Hummel says the parade began shortly after 9/11 in 2001 with the late Larry Anderson and a retired Mike Allen. Hummel says each year the parade lasts about 45 minutes. “We start on Seminary and Ferris and it follows the normal parade route going west down Main Street, around down Cherry Street terminating down by the courthouse where we have our ceremony for the Grand Marshall to speak – our first female veteran Grand Marshall,” Hummel said. “We have Choral Dynamics contributing. They have a singer doing the National Anthem. We have playing of Taps for our fallen soldiers. The mayor (will also) be speaking.” That Grand Marshall is Air Force Captain and nurse during the Vietnam War Dorothy Plunkett. Plunkett attended the former Cottage College of Nursing here in Galesburg. The parade will also feature the Monmouth College Pipe Band, and the Costa Catholic Academy Band. Line-up for the parade is Sunday, November 11th at 1:00 pm with a 2:00 pm start.
