Sandburg Board proposing to keep tax levy at ‘steady rate’

Carl Sandburg College, at least tentatively, is planning to leave their tax levy for next year essentially where it is this year. College Treasurer and CFO Cory Gall told WGIL after the Board of Trustees approved the tentative levy Thursday night that the tax rate is marked to decrease by about a 4/10 of a cent per $100 of Equalized Assessed Value. In other words, Sandburg’s portion of your property tax bill won’t be noticeably higher or lower. Gall says for most properties in District 518, what Sandburg levies for taxes represents about 10 percent of their property tax bill. He says the board tries hard to balance maintaining a quality education with getting the tax burden low.

“It’s really been the colleges mission to keep property taxes level throughout our district and really maintain a good quality experience out here at the college. It’s very important to kind of maintain those levees at a very steady rate.”

Sandburg’s district encompasses at least portions of ten counties.
