GPD investigating weekend injuries to elderly woman

A Galesburg woman was life-flighted to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria for injuries sustained in a weekend incident.

Officers were dispatched to an apartment at 1711 W. Carl Sandburg Drive Saturday night at around 8:14 for a check well-being of a 72-year-old woman who had not been seen throughout the day, which a neighbor described as being unusual.

According to a police report, officers would eventually gain access to the apartment observe hearing groaning and “gurgling” sounds coming from the back of the apartment. It was noted in the police report that officers observed blood to be seen on the walls outside of the bathroom.

Officers found 72-year-old with severe injuries to her face lying on the bathroom floor. She was described as having swollen eyes and a badly swollen mouth.

It was also noted in the police report that the apartment did not appear to have been ransacked.

GHAS arrived soon after and notified officers that the woman’s blood sugar was “very low” and then transported her to Cottage Hospital. She would later be transported to Peoria.

The neighbor that contacted GPD told officers she heard two groans at around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. By 7:15 or 7:30 p.m., the groaning returned and was continuous, which prompted contact with police.
