County facing funding challenge with Mary Davis Home

At last week’s Knox County Board meeting, the board was informed of a serious position the county faces in regards to the Mary Davis Home. While discussing the committee report for the Mary Davis Home in Galesburg, Committee Chair Bob Bondi referred to a letter the board received from Superintendent of the Mary Davis Home Wendi Steck. The salaries the state has allocated for the home are to be severely cut. Bondi said normally the state will pay for 28 of the 35 employees at the Mary Davis Home. According to the letter, in the past year, the state reimbursed the county a little over $1.1 million ($1,174,671). Now the state has allocated just over $796,000 ($796,735) which will be a reduction of over $377,000 ($377,936). Bondi said the state is really “mandating us to do a lot more than they’re appropriating for.”

“(We’re) still expected to keep these counselors in position,” Bondi said. “I encourage all of our board members to take a copy of this letter (and) write a letter to each of our elected officials our representatives, our state senators, and anyone else that you think would make a difference because this will be a serious shortfall for the Mary Davis Home.”  He added, “I don’t know what they’re thinking – it’s not fair that they mandate something and appropriate a serious lack of funds.”
