City Council voting on reducing penalty for possessing small amounts of cannabis

The City of Galesburg’s aldermen tonight could make the minimum penalty for small marijuana possession $150 after previously being $300.

The $150 fine would be for possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana in city limits.

This comes after in 2016 when Illinois decriminalized the less than 10 grams, making it a civil violation and removing possibility of jail.

The ordinance would essentially align city code with existing state law.

Also on final reading tonight council could increase the number of Class A liquor licenses in town to 24, to give it to Craft Deli and Butcher.

Craft opened last week on South Seminary Street. Council documents say Craft plans on selling packaged wine and beer in addition to serving drinks on the premises.

Alderman will also take up an amendment to their contract with Royal Cleaning for their services on City Hall and the Public Safety Lobby.

The contract would be changed to include Royal clean the remainder of the Public Safety Building as the building’s part-time custodian position has become vacant.

Overall their will be a slight increase to city cost, as the extended contact with Royal amounts to about $26,000 whereas the previous situation, having two part-time custodians cost about $20,000 annually.
