The City of Abingdon is hosting a “Totem Pole Rededication” event Saturday, September 22nd in Abingdon’s Rotary Park from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The totem pole was recently taken down and refurbished and has been put back up. The free event includes guest speakers State Representative Norine Hammond and Knox County Sheriff David Clague and others. The rededication will also have a cookout, children activities, and more.

Saturday, the Galesburg NAACP’s will be holding its 2018 Freedom Gala at the T. Fleming Fieldhouse at Knox College. NAACP member Pam Davidson tells WGIL you won’t want to miss this year’s Gala. “Our Freedom Gala is based on youth and youth doing great things,” Davidson said. “We have three wonderful young speakers. We will have our scholarships that we are awarding. It’s just a great night to be out. You can call me, Pam Davidson, and I can give you a ticket before Saturday (September 22nd), or contact our Facebook page . (Tickets) are $40 and no tickets are sold at the door.” The evening will include cocktails and a DJ at 5:30 pm with a dinner served at 6:30 pm. This year’s theme is “Black and Gold, with a Hint of Mint.” The event also includes dancing, and a silent auction. To contact Pam Davidson for tickets, call 335-6221.

Another fundraiser beginning Saturday night is the 2nd Annual “Name that Tune Music Trivia” for the Galesburg Choral Dynamics at the Galesburg Knights of Columbus Hall. Doors open at 5:30 pm and trivia begins at 7:00 pm. The cost is $10 per person with 10-person teams. Prizes will be awarded to 1st and 2nd place. The night will include a 50/50, a silent auction, and food available by the KC Hall. Competitors can pay at the door, but pre-registration is encouraged by emailing Jen Stegall at jenstegall58@gmail.com.

The 61st Annual Chicken Dinner for Costa Catholic Academy in Galesburg is Sunday, September 23nd. The dinner will run from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm in Costa’s gymnasium. Christine Shannon is a co-chair for the chicken dinner and she tells WGIL it’s one of the biggest fundraisers for the school for the year. “We are hoping people will come out and eat and see our school and take tours,” Shannon said. “We order close to one thousand pounds of chicken. We (will) have fried and grilled. With that, we’ll have mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cole slaw or apple sauce, rolls and butter, drinks…. We have a dessert table for an extra donation. We (also) have drive-through service so you don’t even need to get out of your car.” The cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.
