New grocery store liquor license approved at Knoxville City Council

A new type of liquor license will be available, but approval of a grocery store proposal was not voted on during last night’s Knoxville City Council meeting. The proposed grocery store, and in accordance with the new liquor license, would see 70% of the store’s space be used for groceries and 30% used for liquor sales to qualify. Piyush Dorgra and Harpreet Singh’s proposal to bring a grocery store to the former Goff’s Appliance Store in downtown Knoxville was met with more criticism during last night’s public comment. Space for parking along with the store being classified as a grocery store not a convenience store were the main concerns during the meeting’s public comment section. The general consensus from Aldermen was that the public did want a grocery store to come to town, but the proposed store was tabled for a future meeting. The idea of contractors and the public being able to use the City’s tree dump site near the Knox County Nursing Home was brought to the council. Being able to police the dump and manage the quantity of debris coming in was a concern and the idea was denied. And finally, the council approved the 2018 Halloween trick-or-treat hours for October 31st from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
