Galesburg Council abandons vote on rezoning

Galesburg City Council did not even take a vote on the rezoning of a West Carl Sandburg Drive property Friday night.

Aldermen had on the agenda rezoning on a piece of land that is situated between Lowe’s and residential properties on corner of Lincoln Park Drive in order to accommodate a thrift store
The land is zoned for offices but needed to be rezoned for retail.

Alderman Wayne Allen made a motion to approve the item but none of the five other council members present would second, leaving the measure dead in the water.

Council also voted 6-0 to demolish a property at 426. S Chambers Street.

City Manager Todd Thompson says that the city wasn’t getting an “adequate response” from the owner after he’d received charges through the Administrative Adjudication system.

Aldermen also approved quite zone improvements at the Ottumwa Subdivison.

Part of what’s included with the based bid of around $158,000 is installing concrete medians, removing and installing curb and gutter and resurface roadway near the crossings where the pavement is in poor condition.

Improvements would be seen at crossings on Academy, Cedar and South Henderson streets.

Improvements will also be made by BNSF.
