The Henderson County Coroner says a human skull found prior to Labor Day when it washed up on a shore near Burlington, Iowa has been identified.
Kris Beals says the identity is that of 23-year-old Shawn Patrick Berthel of Bellevue, Iowa. Berthel died in 2011 after a snowmobiling accident. Beals says it was learned part of the man’s remains were found two years later still in a snowmobile suit during a dredging operation.
The skull was first discovered July 30th, when it washed up on the shore of the Illinois side of Burlington Island along the Mississippi River, where a logging company was working, and then taken to Peoria for a forensic exam.
