Saturation Saturday leads to many DUI arrests.

A 10-hour statewide effort to catch drunk drivers last month netted 39 DUI arrests.
State police along with local officials held: “Saturation Saturday” — which was law enforcement out in force conducting the patrols, especially at night, when it’s more likely that drivers will be drunk or drugged when they get behind the wheel. Most of the drivers busted were caught in roadside safety checks and special details. Eight drivers had more than twice the legal limit blood alcohol level. Illinois State Police Lieutenant Matt Boerwinkle says unfortunately, that was probably just the tip of the iceberg. “That’s 39 potential crashes that could’ve occurred,” Boerwinkle said. “And if you think about it, overall statewide how many roads were NOT covered during that 10-hour period, that’s probably only a small percentage of what was really out there.” State police also made 162 other arrests that weekend for open alcohol, possession of drugs and outstanding warrants. Boerwinkle added that if you notice another motorists weaving in and out of lanes or driving erratically, that person is most likely having a medical issue or is driving impaired. Motorists are encouraged to call 911 if they spot a drunk driver.
