Sandburg considering reviving agricultural certificate program

New President of Carl Sandburg College, Dr. Seamus Reilly says that part of the community college’s job is to create pathways for those with no education. He says his philosophy as an educator is that almost every student is capable of making it but some need a “little boost.”

In an interview with WGIL Sandburg President Seamus Reilly emphasized the importance of nursing, CNC and other certificate programs and its effect on the Sandburg district.

He says the college is also exploring the reintroduction of training and certifications related to agriculture.

Reilly says he recently met with the Knox County Farm Bureau, but the college would have extensive conversations with them first, to find out what the needs in modern farming are.

“Because farming has changed too. It’s become much more scientific, much more technological,” Reilly says. “We need to make sure that we do bring back something back in at the certificate level, that it’s going to be worthwhile for the student and they’re going to be able to get employment.”

Reilly also talked up some of the many benefits of students attending Sandburg before transferring to a four-year college.

He says general ed classes expose students to subjects they may not have come across otherwise.

Also he says Sandburg students tend to do just as well if not better than students who started their secondary education at a four-year school.
