Galesburg alderman view draft of comprehensive plan

Everything from the sanitary district to police and anything in between is getting a look at the City of Galesburg’s comprehensive plan.

The plan covers snapshots of Galesburg’s past and present situation and a large volume of information and recommendations of how the city can grow while improving life for citizens.

Alderman Jeremy Karlin suggested adding a part to include better cooperation between government units.

Alderman Peter Schwartzman asked how this plan could be ensured to be carried out.

Devin Lavigne, with the firm, that made the plan says that the plans they produce are more action oriented and the creation of an implementation action committee will help to carry out the plan.

Houseal Lavigne also broke down into detail, the plusses and minuses and goals for Henderson St., the Downtown, and Grand Avenue.

Some recommendations from Houseal Lavigne put forth in the plan are fairly vague and some are rather specific.

Looking at the downtown the firm identified potential areas for development; the area around the Broadview Hotel, the site of the former OT Johnson building along with a recommendation to try to have parking behind Main Street businesses.

For example, they recommend the downtown establishing parking maximums to encourage more open space, and soften the town’s appearance in commercial areas.

There are also four specific recommendations for the sanitary district.
Something more general would include an encouragement working with businesses and thinking of entities like local health providers as “partners”.

They presented a table for the city to use to attract retail development, however, Houseal Lavigne cautions that the city should take care to not go after a business that could push out an existing business.

Stay tuned for a forthcoming date where the public will be able to attend an open house to give their input on the plan.
