Planning and Zoning Commission approves Aldi’s expansion

A Galesburg grocery store has been given the go-ahead to expand at the site it’s been at the last several years.

The Galesburg Planning and Zoning Commission Tuesday granted the variance for the owners of Aldi’s on North Seminary Street to build a 1,200 square foot expansion – work on which is expected to start soon.

But, city planner Steve Gugliotta says there’s a catch.

“On the east side of the Aldi building, they’re proposing to add 20 feet, which will go into the existing parking lot, which will reduce some of the parking spaces they currently have,” says Gugliotta. “To try and achieve the required parking spaces, on the south side of the building, they are adding some spaces where they can.”

But, Gugliotta says it still won’t meet the requirements, which is why the variance is needed.

It’s also not clear why the overall expansion is needed. Gugliotta says when the city sent a letter to Aldi asking for more details, they didn’t get a response. WGIL didn’t get one either.

The commission also approved a variance needed so that Gale Credit Union on North Henderson Street can make an alteration to their outside signage.
