Changes have been going on at the Knox County YMCA. What was the jungle gym area has now become a 30-minute express workout room. Members are encouraged to follow the posted routine that includes rowing, steps and a 360-T machine. New selectorized machines were purchased for the wellness center and a new jungle gym is coming to the McBride Gym. Another new feature coming next month is the Y’s “Cardboard Challenge.” – according to Associate Executive Director, Kelly Corbin. “This is our first year we’re doing it,” Corbin said. “It’s going on August 4th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. You can come in – it’s for youth ages 15 and younger. This year our theme is “Robots.” You can come in and build a cardboard robot – we’ll have the basics (like) glue and scissors. Then we’re going to have a competition from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm with judges; we’ll give out a trophy; and of course, we’ll have something for everyone.” The challenge is free, and the Y is accepting donations of cardboard, yarn, fabric, toys and shoe boxes for the event. Corbin also says sign-up for fall soccer for pre-school through 5th graders is underway. Games run on Saturdays starting September 8th through October 13th – and volunteer coaches are needed. She also encourages the public to follow the Knox County YMCA on Facebook for upcoming August small group fitness classes.
