Sandburg leadership group pushes back against negativity about Galesburg

It seems that a lot of negative talk has arisen on social media lately about Galesburg following acts of violence covered in the media. But Carl Sandburg College Admissions Recruiter and Diversity Coordinator Anthony Law along with Sandburg student group Men of Distinction/ Women of Character says the negative shouldn’t be overstated.

Law says social media has given people a platform to blame.

He says when people ascribe responsibility to certain groups for local issues of violence, it’s a way for them to avoid taking responsibility for what they can to do to improve the community.

One of the Men of Distinction Jaron Steward says he regrets some decisions he made when he was younger, but in part through the group he’s worked to improve his own image as well as his city’s.

Lester Spinks says he’s like a lot of Galesburg youth, that grew up in less than ideal circumstances but had to choose whether to become a part of or resist a life of violence and drugs.

“It just starts with maturity, like growing up. Because when I was growing up of course I had friends who did that type of thing but I separated myself from that because I knew that I was better than that,” Spinks says.

Men of Distinction is an honorary organization that works to develop community leaders through community service and greater cultural awareness and also promotes academic success.
