Summertime – watch out for ticks.

A University of Illinois Entomology expert urges the public to watch out for ticks this summer. Tick-borne illnesses are on the rise in Illinois. It’s smart to take precautions when you’re in the woods or a grassy area. U of I Entomology Professor Brian Allen says spraying your clothing with repellent containing permethrin can held keep bugs from hitching a ride. He also recommends a “tick “check” before entering your home.
Some ticks don’t attach right away.”A tick can be on your for potentially several hours without having the opportunity to transmit an illness,” Allen said. “If you remove that tick before it becomes fully attached, you can prevent yourself from becoming exposed.” Allen says the best way to remove a tick that has latched on is to grasp it with tweezers close to your skin and slowly pull straight upwards.
