Dumpster fire reported at Soangetaha Country Club

Galesburg Firefighters responded to Soangetaha Country Club where a dumpster fire was extinguished Tuesday night.

According to police reports, officers responded to 238 N. Soangetaha Road at 10:32 for the fire located behind the pool area. Police arrived on scene after fire personnel had already put out the flames.

An employee told officers that he was closing the business down for the night and had taken out a few loads of trash to the the dumpster when he observed the fire.

He told police that he hadn’t seen anyone or observed any suspicious activity prior to seeing the fire. He said he called 911 and attempted to put out the fire himself, but his efforts were futile.

GFD personnel advised police that someone probably threw a cigarette butt into the can or something within the trash being taken out ignited the dumpster.
