U of I Extension holding meeting to share information on invasive pests

Emerald ash borer are still an issue in Knox County and Chris Enroth with the U of I Extension says it likely will be a persistent issue year after year.He says they’re examining the EAB in Michigan where the pests originate to see how the species settles after they knock out all the trees in an area.

Enroth says the mortality rate for ash trees in an area where EAB has infested is 100 percent without systemic pesticides being applied.

This Friday at 10 a.m. the U of I Extension will hold an information meeting to update residents on the infestation of EAB.

Enroth says they’ll discuss…

“Has anything changed in terms of its control and management and also we want to dive into another invasive pest that we have been dealing with these last few years and that’s Japanese beetles,” Enroth says.

This area, specifically Monmouth has shown to have one of the highest concentrations of Japanese beatles in the state.

Enroth explains that it’s not the beetle itself that spreads, but rather humans that move the beetle from location to location.

If interested in attending the the meeting contact the Knox County U of I Extension office at 342-5108.
