Weaver says higher Motor Fuel Tax may be needed to fix roads

The state of Illinois has a spending plan in place for the next fiscal year for roads and bridges. But State Senator Chuck Weaver of Peoria says higher motor fuel taxes may be a reality at some point in the future. Weaver said there’s always been dollars in the budget – but now it’s been allocated because of the last tax increase. According to Weaver, IDOT has $11 billion allocated for the next 6 years. He said there’s also been talk about a capital bill separate from the budgeting that would be a five to seven year bonding structure to get roads improved. “I can see that coming to a vote in November in January,” Weaver added. Weaver went on to say that plan is “politically difficult because there needs to be a tax to go with that.” He admits that he’s on that committee – but said he’s been talking to people in his district to see if they want to see him support it. “We all know how bad roads are,” Weaver said “But do we want to see a motor fuel tax increase to pay for that?” In order to support it, Weaver said he first needs to see a great plan – as well as support from his constituents.
