Bond set for Galesburg woman on felony DUI charge

Bond has been set at $7,500 for a Galesburg woman charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence.

57-year-old Brenda L. Showalter made a video appearance in Knox County Circuit Court Monday with Judge Raymond A. Cavanaugh.

Cavanaugh appointed a public defender to represent Showalter who will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on July 3rd.

She was arrested Sunday night after Galesburg police officers were dispatched to Losey Street on a driving complaint call.

Officers allegedly found Showalter in her Chevy Blazer stopped in the intersection of Losey and Seminary Streets. It was noted she remained stationary at the intersection for two full green light cycles.

Reports indicate that a strong odor of alcohol was coming from her. Additionally she was asked to produce identification and proof of insurance, which she allegedly had trouble doing. Officers noted that she had coordination problems pulling her license from her wallet.

An open container of alcohol was spotted in the center console of her vehicle.

Because the vehicle was stopped in the intersection of a busy road, officers – believing she was intoxicated – asked her to step out of the vehicle so they could move it to which she allegedly said “I’m not doing a sobriety test.”

She was assisted to the curb after losing her balance. It was noted she allegedly became defensive with police and cursed at them, telling them multiple times, without being prompted, that she was not doing a field sobriety test.

She was arrested on driving under the influence, and it was noted that police discovered vehicle damage to her SUV.

She was transported to the Public Safety Building for DUI monitoring. When asked to provide a breath sample, she refused.

Officers said to her that she may have had one to many, to which she allegedly responded “yes I did.”
