On Air Now

Steps to reduce electric bill could help this summer

Half of our annual, home energy use is consumed in heating and cooling. Some of this year’s energy efficiency tips for the summer include: keeping the thermostat around 78 degrees, utilizing ceiling fans, and using the oven less. Checking your heating and cooling systems annually should always be done to make sure they are functioning properly. Another tip from Community and Economic Development Educator Steven Groner include connecting small appliances to one power strip – that can be turned on or off easily.

“The rule of thumb,” explains Groner, “is that anything that has a little blue light or green light glowing, whether your using the appliance or not, means it’s drawing phantom electricity. That is why using a power strip is a really good idea.”

Caulking and sealing drafts and leaks around doors and windows so cool air doesn’t escape is another tip. Now that the cost of L-E-D light bulbs have become less expensive, they serve as another cost-saving solution over time.
