ROWVA social media features and is run by students

ROWVA District 208’s social media presence is largely guided by hands of students themselves.Superintendent Joe Sornberger explains that they give a student class credit for overseeing their Facebook, Twitter and Youtube accounts.

He says it was a hard sell for him at first but he instilled in this past year’s intern, Grace Johnson, that she was promoting the district’s image.

Next year Maggie Dickinson will take on social media duties.

A key part of the Tigers social media presence is what they call ROWVA Strong Media Broadcast in which Sornberger interviews students on their accomplishments.

“And then we post it on YouTube, we have a ROWVA media broadcast site and it goes out on Facebook and Twitter,” Sornberger says. “But for me it’s 15 minutes of bliss because I get to talk to our kids about the things they do.”

ROWVA also has a unique event inspired by a trip Sornberger took to the barbershop.

He says he saw a cartoon that joked that you will never see a signing ceremony for academics.

Now in the Spring ROWVA holds a signing day for any high school student going onto college, the workforce or the military.

They invite families, take photos, the student signs and Sornberger interviews them.
