Alderman to consider housing standards and rental licensing

After months of conversation and compromise tonight the Galesburg City Council could finally approve new housing standards and a rental licensing program.

Alderman will have these items on final reading at tonight’s meeting at 6:30 p.m.

The rental program will trade in registrations from licenses which can be revoked if landlords don’t keep rental units up to standards.

It also will ensure that every rental unit in the city is inspected by city staff or self inspection at least once every five years.

Council can also approved a bid for about $1 million to reconstruct Brooks Street from Lombard Street to Oak Street.

A full depth concrete pavement and a concrete curb and gutter would be installed in this project.

Council could also vote on accepting a donation of the West Theatre from the Galesburg Downtown Council who are negotiating the sale from owner Michael Spinks but it’s not clear that the deal will be done in time for a council vote tonight.

The GDC is said to be negotiating a sale of the property at 42 and 50 Prairie St.

If a deal gets done at all, it may not be ready for Galesburg alderman to take a vote tonight.

They also have on the agenda hiring Klingner and Associates to do work concerning demolition of the property.

The city would like to acquire the run-down building and tear it down to incorporate it into a revamped Park Plaza and downtown which is scheduled for a face-lift this summer.

Council also have on first reading removing one Class A liquor license. Council documents say there is one excess license currently, but an interested party could apply for it in the future.
