Sandburg Men’s Golf heading to Nationals….again

The Carl Sandburg College Men’s Golf Team is returning to Nationals this year.

The Chargers have no doubt been dominate for the past decade making it to Nationals for the past six straight years – and ten of the last eleven years. Head Coach Ryan Twaddle tells WGIL that, as a coach, he’s doing his best at filling the shoes of the Sandburg coaches before him. “You know, that all attributes back to coach Dean Betts (who) restarted our golf program and did a tremendous job getting it going again eleven year ago,” Twaddle said. “Then Coach Harding did a great job with it. I’ve tried to fill those shoes and keep it going as well. We have to finish in the top two of our division to get that automatic bid to go to Nationals. For individuals to go, they have to finish in the top five.”  The Chargers finished 2nd in the Arrowhead Conference and four players earned spots on the all-conference team. Those players are freshmen Bryce and Brady Grafton from Orion, freshman Brayden Reece from Monmouth-Roseville, and sophomore Ryan Hansen from Kewanee. The National Tournament will be held next week in Foley, Alabama just north of Gulf Shores, Alabama. The tournament will award two National Champions: a 5-man team and an individual. Nationals begin Monday – the team will travel Thursday, May 17th after Carl Sandburg College’s graduation ceremony.
