Food Drives and Tons of Trivia fill a feel-good weekend

The 26th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is being held this weekend.

You can help donate to local food pantries – and you don’t even have to leave home. Saturday, May 12th letter carriers for the United State Post Office will be collecting food on their routes. Toni Ball with the Galesburg Post Office says with school letting out soon, every little bit helps. “Just go through your cupboards and get soups…and any types of non-perishable (food),” Ball said. “If you do have like a glass (jar/container) try to wrap it as best as you can. But make sure the date on it is still good. Put it in the bag and put it next to your mailbox. If you’ve got one of those hidden mailboxes, try to put it out (so carriers can see it). I will be having drivers going around – trying to help the carriers out.”

Another feel-good event for a good cause this weekend is the Friends of Faith Music Trivia Saturday night. Proceeds from the event are to benefit improvements at Faith United Methodist Church in Galesburg. Doors open at 5:00 pm at Harley Pub’s banquet hall and the cost is $120 for ten-member teams. The event will have food available, a 50/50, bake sale, wine pull, and mulligans for purchase. To register, visit the church’s website.

A key volunteer opportunity for Knox County is the United Way Day of Caring May 12th. The United Way, along with Heart & Soul, Pay It For-WARD, Gale Scholars, Kiwanis and more have expanded this year’s event so volunteers have a wider scope of opportunities. Community members are encouraged to sign up, and head out to various local sites and volunteer time to improve the community. Some of those sites include: stocking the Rotary Library, landscaping for the YMCA Early Learning Center, painting Camp Big Sky, sorting shelves for the FISH Food Pantry and many more.

To register, visit the United Way of Knox County Website.

The Abingdon Banty League is hosting a trivia night Saturday at the Abingdon American Legion starting at 6:00 pm. The cost is $100 per ten-person team and will include a silent auction, 50/50, bake sale, food and cash prizes. Call Tara Dejaynes to register at (309) 569-1016.
