Naming underpass for late Rev. Sibley clears Illinois Senate

The Illinois Senate today unanimously approved naming the East Main St. Underpass of the BNSF railroad tracks in Galesburg as the Rev. Jon A. Sibley Underpass. This comes after Galesburg City Council proposed and passed the idea in October.

The structure is owned by the Illinois Department of Transportation so General Assembly approval is necessary and one of those hurdles was cleared today.

Sen. Chuck Weaver sponsored the resolution in the Senate.

Weaver says he didn’t know Rev. Sibley personally but says learned a lot about him from meeting with his wife, Vicki, and became very impressed with his resume.

Sibley served in the U.S. Air Force obtaining the rank of Sergeant, then became an Illinois State Police trooper, a minister at Full Gospel Church and in many ways this only scratches the surface of Sibley’s involvement in the community.

“I mean this man just put a lot of life into his life and we’re honored to have him in one of my communities and Galesburg was very blessed to have him,” Weaver says.

Next Senate Joint Resolution 47 moves to the House where Representatives Norine Hammond of Macomb and Joe Sosnowski of Rockford are the sponsors.
