Comics, Dogs, and Peter Pan – another weekend full of events.

The Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg hasn’t shown any sings of slowing down recently, and this weekend, will feature a show about never growing up. The Performing Arts Academy of Galesburg presents: Peter Pan Junior starting tonight. Peter Pan has been entertaining audiences for over 60 years around the world, and Peter Pan Jr. will be geared towards younger performers. Executive Director of the Orpheum Theatre, Kevin Maynard tells WGIL this weekend’s show is just another performance on a long list of highly-anticipated performances offered at the Orpheum. “Performing Arts Academy of Galesburg celebrating 25 years, with Peter Pan Jr.” Maynard said. “For those that don’t know – that means flying in the Orpheum Theatre – very cool. Tickets are on sale and I will say, they are moving pretty quickly.” Peter Pan Jr. will be presented Friday, May 4th and Saturday, May 5th at 7:00 pm – and again on Sunday, May 6th at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $15 at the Orpheum Theatre Box Office and online.

Saturday, May 5th is Comicfest at the Galesburg Public Library from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Members of the 501st Legion will be present – known for spreading the force and stories of Star Wars.
The free event will feature “Rust” – a live action role-playing game, a NERF duel, a Youth Pokemon League, free giveaways, and a cosplay costume contest.

Coming up on Sunday, May 6th, the 12th Annual Eastminister Dog Show hosted by the Knox County Humane Society returns to Windish Drive. Erin Buckmaster with the Humane Society tells WGIL that most of the dogs in the show come from the shelter. “It’s a fun event,” Buckmaster said. “It helps raise awareness for the shelter – just getting people out to see the animals. The winner of each division will get a blue ribbon and a treat for their pet. We put it all in a drawing and then we draw (for a winner) from that. We feel every dog is a winner. It’s more fun that way, and it takes the tenseness out of the event.” The pet that takes the top drawing will win a tote with a $50 gift card. Hy Vee will also be on site grilling out for lunch and there will be photos taken with pets and their owners. Attendees can even bring a chair to donate to the shelter – and if you adopt a dog that has a favorite chair of their own, you can bring the chair home as well. The event begins at 1:00pm on Sunday – the cost to register is $20 and registration begins at 12:00pm behind the shelter – in the new outside structure at 1855 Windish Drive. Organizers will also have information on hand for those interested to become a volunteer for the Knox County Humane Society.
