202 approves amended budget for school year, technology purchases

Monday night the District 202 Board of Education heard a presentation on the budget – the first since January.

Superintendent Steve Wilder presented the school board with his amended budget for the fiscal year 2018 and informed the board that the district’s expenditures exceed their revenue so far this year.

He said that while that’s never a good thing, it was good to note that the District would receive their property tax revenue in May and June. “You hate to be spending more than you’re bringing in,” said Wilder. “The fact that 55% of our property tax revenue is typically received in May and June – so the biggest chunk of tax revenue doesn’t come in until May and June right at the end of the fiscal year. In fact the biggest payments really don’t come in until June.”

As of now, the district’s expenditures are over 2-million dollars higher than revenue.  Additionally, Wilder said that the evidence based funding model has been flowing state aid in on time, and they’ve seen a bit of a boost from them.

The board approved the amended budget and also approved a pair of technology related items.

Wilder presented the board with several bids that the district had received for a three-year lease on Chromebooks.

Wilder said that CDI out of Toronto, Canada had the best bid and provided the best option for the district.

However, Wilder did not ask the board to approve the bid. Instead he asked that the board approve a “Not To Exceed” of $153,000 and that they were shopping the lease around to make sure the interest rate is the best for the district. “We are shopping the lease. So CDI has had a competitive lease directly through them,” said Wilder. “They do that but we’re also looking in a couple of other opportunity financial institutions locally and not locally – just to make sure that we’re getting good interest rate. We can bring it down a little bit farther.”

Because of the district spreading the payments so they can afford to upgrade district Smart Boards, and other technology.

The board also approved the purchase of English Language Arts resource for teachers at a top price of $101,000. That price is the top price, Wilder said that faculty has already identified some resources they will not need – which will reduce the price.
