Oversized trash items getting picked up next week in Galesburg

Clean Up Days are next week in Galesburg. It’s the highly anticipated week that comes twice a year when you can put large items out for trash pick-up that normally are not accepted.

Associate City Planner Julie Main says those oversized items are things over 50 pounds in weight and greater than five feet in length.

Normally for such items you would need to buy a $19 oversize sticker for them to be picked up.

Main says despite the fact that larger items that normal will be picked up, not everything can be set on the curb.

“The Knox County Landfill does not accept liquid waste,” Main says. “We are fortunate we have a paint recycling program May through September at Wal-Mart but for example you can’t put out liquid paint, automotive batteries, propane tanks, large amounts of demolition waste. It’s not designed for you to take down your entire fence or take down your garage.”

Main asks that for items like a refrigerator with a door that residents please either tape the door shut or remove it.

Items will be picked up on residents’ normal refuse pick up day next week.

Clean Up Days for the fall already have dates that are set for Sept. 17 – 21.
