Habitat for Humanity set for 54th groundbreaking

Habitat for Humanity of Knox County is prepping a groundbreaking for the non-profit’s 54th home. The home will be the 6th Habitat home of a 7th family neighborhood on Ecklund Court in the southern portion of Galesburg.

In the organization’s 25th year, Executive Director Jordan Knight tells WGIL that for an organization that is nearly entirely volunteer-based, breaking ground on the 54th home is something to be proud of. “The fact that we are partnering with families that a lot of other people would choose not to partner with (and) we’re doing something with volunteer labor that is (one of) the most dangerous jobs for professionals, and we take all of that: the experience, the inexperience, the wide variety of backgrounds that we get our volunteers from, the resources needed to make it, and God makes it happen,”

Knight said. Meanwhile, Habitat’s 53rd home is still under construction. Knight says, due to weather, the interior of the home is all but complete – the outside is still in need of some ground work and siding. He says cold weather and extended winter conditions has caused a few setbacks.

Habitat plans on dedicating the 53rd home in the first weekend in June. The groundbreaking for the 54th home is set for next Saturday, April 7th at 1:00 pm – rain or shine.
