Work on Farnham Street Bridge set to begin in May

By early summer, if you drive around Galesburg you’ll see construction jobs literally all around town. But by the end of the year, your drive around town will be much smoother. The bridge on Farnham Street just north of Main Street is set to be basically completely replaced. Director of Planning & Public Works for the City of Galesburg, Wayne Carl tells WGIL, they wanted to start the bridge project after the East Main Street Underpass project was completed – but in order to get it done before the end of the year, they’ll be starting sooner. “We need to start right after school gets out,” Carl said. “School lets out on May 22nd and the contractor will start on May 23rd and close the street there on Farnham Street. So May 23rd is the date they are shooting for – provided we can get some utility conflicts resolved prior to that.” The concrete bridge was rebuilt in 1976. Carl says the beams on the bridge will be replaced – they’re corroded due to salt over the years. The bridge will need to comply with the rail road’s vertical height clearance – so the bridge will be another two feet higher. New concrete deck beams will be installed and a new concrete wearing service on the deck too. The sub-structure units will also be replaced – making it basically an entirely new bridge. Carl says this project will have some rail road coordination – but since the project doesn’t interfere with the rail road tracks, it’ll be much easier than the East Main Street Underpass project.
