Active grenade found in Galesburg

The discovery of an active grenade had the Galesburg Police and Peoria Police Department Bomb Squad responding to Arnold Street Thursday afternoon.

At around 3:30, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Arnold after being notified of the discovery.

Officers met with a resident who said that his family was cleaning out the home of his deceased uncle.

The uncle had served in World War II, and it was believed that he brought the grenade home after the war and hid it in the basement where it remained for decades.

The grenade was reported to be intact and operational.

Upon receiving a request from GPD, the Peoria Bomb Squad arrived and secured the explosive.

It was transported to the Galesburg Police Department Range and was destroyed with a controlled explosive detonation.
