205 Board and GEA meet separately to prepare for contract negotiations

Both the Galesburg Education Association teacher’s union and District 205 Board of Education held closed session meetings Wendesday night to plan for upcoming negotiations over a new teacher’s contract.

Four years ago negotiations were highly contentious and resulted in district teachers striking for over two weeks, causing missed days of school.

The contract that was ratified at the end of those negotiations is set to expire on July 31.

Prior to last night’s meeting Superintendent John Asplund told WGIL that it was a “brief meeting” to make the board is “ready for negotiations.”

They were planning on going over “positions as a full body” to ensure that the “negotiating committee is empowered to move forward on behalf of the full board.”

GEA President Dave Sharp said his organization was also scheduled to meet last night to prepare for bargaining.

Due to to the nature of last’s meetings, press was not allowed and few details are known.
