Local schools prepare for National Walk Out Day

Today schools across the nation are expected to see protests and activities that recognize the shooting victims at a Florida high school, one month to the day after 17 were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The national school walkout idea is believed to have originated with EMPOWER, the youth branch of the Women’s March.

Students are expected to walk out at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes in commemoration with the 17 slain.

Local districts are preparing in different ways like Galesburg High School, in which students have worked with administration to try to make the walkout as safe and orderly as possible.

Superintendent Dr. John Asplund has said students may face consequences on par with an unexcused absence.

Knoxville High School’s Facebook page says they will let students and staff go into the auditorium for a 17 minute moment of silence at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a discussion on how KHS can be more inclusive.

Students at Monmouth-Roseville have planned a way to acknowledge the tragic events but with a “minimum” amount of disruption.

MRHS Principal William Bradford in a letter says that at 10 a.m. students and staff who wish to can leave the building and gather on the outside sidewalk, where they will read Parkland victims’ names and observe 17 seconds of silence.

The letter emphasizes that this “is in no way a political protest.”
