Knoxville woman recounts being on cruise ship where woman fell overboard

A 44-year old woman fell overboard a Carnival Cruise Line on Sunday night into the Gulf of Mexico.

Knoxville resident Ange Lee was aboard that ship and spoke with WGIL about the surreal situation she found herself in.

They were on their way to Cozumel, Mexico Sunday after departing from New Orleans when she says around 8 p.m. a message came across the P.A. system alerting passengers that someone had fallen overboard.

Lee tells WGIL that initially it was hard to believe that it was actually happening. “It’s obviously something that doesn’t happen. So it takes a second to sink in,” Lee said. “Once it occurs that it actually really has happened. I think we were all just were kind of silent [with] the news cause you’re helpless.”

She says the crew did a good job of giving updates of what’s going on.

The captain informed passengers that they would be staying in the area where the person had fallen over board for the night to continue searching.

That put the cruise behind schedule. The ship was scheduled to be in Cozumel Monday and Progreso on Tuesday but the delay cause the Progreso stop to be nixed.

They were scheduled to be heading for New Orleans Wednesday morning (this morning), with a shorter trip to the Big Easy given the axed trip to Progreso.
