Firefighters battle structure fire in garage

Fire crews and police personnel were called out to Brooks Street for a structure fire in the late evening on Thursday.

At around 6:35, the structure fire call went out for a garage in the 700 block of East Brooks. Once on scene, police and fire personnel discovered a detached garage with flames blowing out of the east and southeastern sections.

While firefighters battled the blaze, officers spoke with a man who was using the garage as a temporary residence.

According to police reports, the man informed officers he had been staying in the garage. He said he started a fire in a wood burner to warm the building up, then went inside the residence to get food. He told police he was inside for 20 minutes before noticing the garage on fire.

Once the flames were extinguished, the southeastern section of the garage was identified as having the most damage. There they found a makeshift barrel shaped stove in that area.

Police reports indicate that the Galesburg Fire Department is continuing their investigation.
