JC Penney to close Galesburg’s Sandburg Mall location

It’s avoided closure for years, but no more. Texas-based retailer JC Penney confirms it will be closing its store at Galesburg’s Sandburg Mall by May 12th.

A spokesperson tells WGIL News in an e-mail that store liquidation will begin March 5th, with closure on or before the May date.

Despite renovations the past several years, JC Penney has closed multiple locations, and a spokesperson says the closures here are part of “ongoing efforts to achieve sustainable growth and long-term profitability.”

The closure is occurring despite the retailer reporting holiday sales increasing more than three percent in the most recent year.

It’s not clear how many employees are impacted, but the company says employees will be given the opportunity to transfer to other stores, and that separation benefits including outplacement help and career training classes are available.

JC Penney has been in Galesburg in some form or another for almost a century.
